Day #12, October 11, 2016 - Ellie and Nick's 47th Anniversary

We were looking for something special to do today for Nick & Ellie's 47th wedding anniversary. Forty-seven! These kids got married at ages 21 and 19 and have been together since that time. How many people do you know who have accomplished this?

In any event, we all decided to go to Dupont's Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. These gardens are spectacular and cover an area of over 1000 acres and started as a farm by George Pierce who purchased 402 acres of land from William Penn's commissioners in 1700. The land was cleared by George's son who farmed the land and developed a love of plants. His grandsons inherited the farm and continued to enjoy natural history and built an arboretum that eventually covered 15 acres.

Over the many years, the Pierce family lost interest in the arboretum and the farm was sold. The trees were about to be cut down for timber in 1906 when Pierre du Pont, a member of the du Pont family, purchased the land and the lumber contract to save the trees. Pierre thought this a foolish purchase, but eventually used the property as a summer place to entertain friends. He had a love of botany and gradually expanded the gardens for it to become one of the nation's leading horticulture places to visit. The conversatory that he built is very inviting.

I would say that you should not miss visiting this place if you are in the area. The displays change seasonally, and in the evening there is a night lighting experience. However,I have not experienced this yet and therefore cannot comment on this experience. The cost for senior tickets is $17/per person and $20/pp if not a senior. During the busy periods, there is on-line purchase of the tickets.

These are a few of the representative sights that you will see:

Of course you will probably not see these
